MODULE 3. UNFOLDING THE SOCIAL SELF

MODULE 3. UNFOLDING THE SOCIAL SELF
Our first social group is our FAMILY. Our primary knowledge about the things in life came from home. We first learn the basics at home. Before we got the influence from our friends and other social group, we have been influenced by our parents. They have taught us the basic moral of life. They have taught us how to act and how to show ourselves in a right way in society. Our family is the first one to open our eyes that this world is a battlefield. Parents are also considered as our first teacher. They are the ones that provide the initial impression of the world beyond our home. Family also helps an individual in shaping one’s social self.

We have our second social groups which are our friends, the school and other general environment. Because of our friends or involvement of other people, our view to the world expands. We gain more knowledge and social skills from mentors. Because of these social groups, our knowledge towards the world is shaped with collaborative learning conditions as we are exposed to the insights of one’s learning. There was a theory made in order to shape one’s sense of self. These theories were made by Uri Bronfenbrenner entitled “Bioecological Systems of Development”. Microsystem is the system that contains a direct contact or interaction from an individual to his/her society. This includes our families, friends, and other immediate community. Mesosystem refers to the interconnections between the microsystem that affect an individual. Exosystem does not have a direct interaction with the individual but it affects the individual’s development. Macrosystem focuses more on the national issues. Lastly, chronosystems  is about the patterns of our environment.

Individualism-Collectivism Model gave a huge impact in one’s attributes and personal distinctiveness. Individualistic are seen to be competitive and self-reliant. Collectivist prioritizes the relationship and harmony and collectivist people focuses on the interests in order to maintain healthy relationship.

Not everything we see online is the truth. It is not always the real current event. It is still different when you have a face-to-face interaction. Nowadays, social media is the place where people choses to interact more often. Social media are applications and websites that make people around the world connected. Social media helps an individual in terms of self-expression. Social Media became the way of an individual to speak and tell his/her insights. It also increases the value of communication in the world. One thing that makes social media unpleasant is the online disembodiment or having no physical interaction and can display a fake identity.
